First Day Cover Antarctic Drift of the Scientific Exploration Ship Mikhail Somov 15 March - 26 June 1985, depicting the ship and its position on the map of Antarctica, 1986.
The size is 6 ¼" x 4 ½", postally unused, shows a special-issue postal stamp "Drift in the Antarctic ice of the scientific expedition of the Mikhail Somov vessel." The stamp is cancelled with a First Day cancellation stamp dated 10 October 1986. The artwork on the left features the Mikhail Somov, and has a separate calligraphic inscription under it with "First Day" printed in Russian and French. The artist's name, A. Shmidshtein, is printed on the bottom flap on the verso. Published by the USSR Ministry of Communications, circulation unknown.
In mint condition, showing no wear of any kind.
