Hand-Painted Porcelain Pitcher, by Riga Factory, Latvian SSR, 1953-64.

Stands 8" tall to the tip of the spout, capacity 1 liter (approx. 1 quart). Sparsely and tastefully decorated with small hand-painted plant- themed arrangements made to resemble small funny birds. A warm restful mood is conveyed by the off-white tone of the porcelain mass. Maker marked on the bottom (fig. # 614 in Volume One of Marks on Soviet Porcelain, Faience, and Majolica, 1917-1991 by Nasonova et al).

In very good condition. At close inspection, a vertical hairline becomes evident, coming from the top and going to the middle of the pitcher. However, it is not obvious or detractive, and does not reach through to the inside to affect the structural integrity of the pitcher. Tilting the pitcher to reflect a bright light reveals a few tiny scuffs and scratches but those are practically invisible at a normal viewing angle.

Artistically, the Riga Porcelain Factory roots in the rich 19th century traditions of the Kuznetsov and Jessen masters. The nationalized successors of both Kuznetsov Riga and Jessen Riga Porcelain Factories were merged in 1963 into the Riga Porcelain and Faience Factory, later renamed the Riga Porcelain Factory.

Please note that the teaspoon in our photo is for size reference.
