Official Photo of Eduard Shevardnadze (Эдуард Амвросиевич Шеварднадзе), former Soviet foreign minister, circa early 1980s.
Measures 4 ¾" x 7", printed on thin glossy photo paper. This photo was obtained from the photo archives of TASS, Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union, and has the original archival paper tag attached to the verso. The text in the tag reads "Eduard Shevardnadze - candidate to members of the Politburo of the TsK CPSU, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Georgia. Photo Chronicles of TASS. Circulation 940 copies." We feel compelled to add that Shevardnadze was a key figure in Gorbachev's administration. After the collapse of the Soviet Union Shevardnadze became Chairman of the State Council, and then President of Georgia from 1995 to 2003.
In excellent condition. The photo shows just a small faint stain to the right edge. There are more stains to the verso but they have not soaked through to the obverse. Tilting the photo to reflect a bright light reveals an occasional tiny scuff or crinkle to the emulsion, completely invisible at a normal viewing angle. The paper of the archival tag is clean, lightly and evenly age-toned. The typewritten text is crisp and perfectly legible.
Please note that the penny in our photo is for size reference.
