Berniba (Childhood), Latvian Young Pioneers monthly magazine, November 1950.

Measures 9" x 11.5", in paperback covers, 40 pp. excluding the covers. Heavily illustrated with photos and drawings. Latvian text.

In very good condition. The covers are slightly wrinkled and worn along the edges and corners. The internal pages show traces of an old crease at the top corner. The binding staples are tight but rusted, the center page is separated. If desired, this can be fixed quickly and easily with a long stapler. All the text and illustrations are bright, crisp and clear.

The published material is condensed Soviet communist propaganda. The first issue of the magazine was published in December 1945, almost immediately after the end of WW2 and the return of Latvia into the "close-knit family" of the Soviet republics. The Soviets had a formidable task of catching up with brainwashing the young generation of Latvians to match the other, firmly Soviet, republics, and they did a great job of it. The magazine has it all: the bright Soviet future while worshipping Stalin and wearing the pioneer uniforms with red ties, the Red Army warrior advancing fearlessly on the lizard-looking Nazi hugging the ground in a trench, notes and lyrics of communist songs to sing, young Soviet heroes to live up to, and examples of other countries adopting the Soviet way of life and forming their own Young Pioneers, such as the great North Korean leader Kim Ir Sen. The battleship Avrora is also there, on the inside of the back cover but a vital reminder that Soviet communists do not back down, do not give up, and will always be ready to wage war for their ideals.
