Badge for the Liquidation of the Consequences of the Chernobyl Catastrophe, late 1980s.

Brass, "cold" enamels and lacquer; pendant measures 40.3 mm in height (including the eyelet) x 36.0 mm in width; overall height with suspension is approx. 60mm. The drop of blood symbolizes the loss of life and the Alpha, Beta, and Gamma rays refer to and represent the massive amount of radiation involved. The suspension is in brass with a cloth ribbon; its reverse shows the raised logo of the Moscow Mint.

In excellent condition. The obverse is perfect, with completely intact enamel and nicely preserved finish. The reverse shows a minimal amount of tarnish, not detractive. The ribbon shows evidence of wear but remains perfectly clean and sound.

This award was issued to all "liquidators", i.e. participants of the massive clean-up effort.
