Two Citations to Penza Military Commissar Major Sakharov, issued by the Moscow Kremlin Commandants, October 1985 and September 1989.
The artwork decorating the citations is accented by the image of the KGB Kremlin Guard Regiment badge with the KGB shield on the background and superimposed faceted Kremlin star, underlined by "The Kremlin Regiment". The suspension of the badge in the 1985 citation shows the Order of the Red Banner awarded to the unit in 1965. The badge in the 1989 citation also shows the Order of the October Revolution awarded to the regiment in 1986. Both citations were issued to the military commissar of the city of Penza Major Aleksandr Sakharov in recognition of the excellent choice of fresh conscripts he had been supplying to the KGB Kremlin Guard Regiment. The 1985 citation bears the seal of the regiment and is hand-signed by its commander Lt. Gen. S. Shornikov. The 1989 citation does not have the regimental seal, and is signed by its commander V. Skokov, a colonel. This regress may be a coincidence but is probably a reflection of the collapsing structure of the Soviet Union.
In very good condition. The 1989 citation has a small pale stain above the slogan "For our Soviet Motherland". The margins show mild wear and small rips, easily repairable on the verso, if desired. The artwork, typed text, seal and signatures are bright, crisp and perfectly legible.
The Separate Order of the Red Banner KGB Kremlin Guard Regiment is a unique unit which ensures security of the Kremlin, its treasures, and state officials. It also performs ceremonial services, the most visible of which are the two-person guard at the entrance to the Lenin Mausoleum and at the Eternal Flame at the Grave of the Unknown Soldier at the Kremlin Wall. As with all ceremonial military units serving at the seat of a state's government, the KGB Kremlin Guard Regiment conscripts had to meet stringent requirements to their appearance, height, physical fitness, etc. Not an easy task considering the contingent of eighteen-year-olds conscripted into the Soviet Army.
