Zvezda ("Star") Newspaper, #140, 13 June 1919.

Measures 13 ½" x 19", 4 pages. Published by the Novgorod Regional Committee of the Russian Communist Party and the Executive Committee of the Council of Workers', Peasants' and Red Army soldiers' Deputies.

In very good condition. The paper is evenly age-toned and is free of soiling. Minor wear to the edges and short rips at the ends of the fold line are confined to the margins and do not reach the text. The text is a little faded but still perfectly clear and legible.

The issue covers events of the summer offensive of Denikin's Armed Forces in the south of Russia, aimed at Moscow. Also - unrest among the British troops in Murmansk, the Entente's intervention in the Russian north to support the White Northern government at the region.

The "Local Life" section is mostly about the "temporary difficulties" on the path to the shiny communist future. Bread rations are announced for June: ¼ lb of brown bread per day for Category 1 (workers and the military), 1/8 lb. per day for everyone else. A children's holiday, scheduled for 15 June, will include rationed food and beverages (tea, coffee). Physical education courses were being opened, aimed at producing a healthy generation of Soviet workers; teachers and schoolchildren were encouraged to apply.

A short blurb next to the "Local Life" informs that 26 Red Army deserters had been executed by firing squad, realization of the communist slogan "he who is not with us is against us".
