Hell's Puppet, Russian Civil War Poster with Caricatures of Baron Wrangel and the Entente Alliance, circa 1919.
Large format measuring 19" x 27", published by the Literary Department of the Political Directorate of the Revolutionary Military Council of the RSFSR, the collegial supreme military commanding organ of the young Soviet republic. The artwork is a two-part caricature depicting a Red Army soldier about to pierce baron Wrangel with his bayonet, aiming straight for Wrangel's mouth. Apparently, the soldier misses and hits Wrangel's uniform, and as he lifts it up it turns out to be just Wrangel's head on a stick, a puppet animated by the leaders of the Entente Alliance. The imagery is illustrated by short satiric verses printed under each picture.
In very good condition. The poster is printed on thin uncoated paper which has become somewhat brittle and acquired mild wrinkles as well as some tears and minor fraying along the edges. All significant wear has been repaired with library tape on the verso. The colors of the artwork are vibrant and fresh, not faded.
Baron Pyotr Wrangel, aka the Black Baron, was a Russian military officer of Baltic origin in the Imperial Russian Army. During the Russian Civil War, he commanded the anti-Bolshevik White Army in the south of Russia.
Please note that the 1-ft. ruler in our last photo is for size reference.
