United Kingdom, Order of St. John miniature, in original fitted issue case, by R. Gaunt, maker marked.
The Badge is in silver and enamels, 18.6 mm in diameter, weighs 5.3 g. Maker marked "R. Gaunt London" on the crescent-shaped part, probably to be inserted through a suit's lapel eye. Very fine condition, showing slight wear to the side edge and a tiny chip to the white enamel of one of the arms of the cross.
The Case of Issue is in light wood, 96.5 mm x 64.0 mm x 23.7 mm, laminated in textured black paper. The lid is decorated with the cross of the order, in silver. Inside, the lid is lined with black silk, and the fitted pad is finished in black velvet. In very fine condition, showing minor wear to the laminate. Structurally sound, the parts align perfectly, perhaps due to not one but two hinges. The latch is tight and in perfect working order.
The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem was established by Queen Victoria in 1888. It continues to exist to this day as a charitable order of philanthropically minded men and women, whose charity is primarily given through the St. John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem and St. John Ambulance.
