Italy, Order of the Crown of Italy, Commander Cross on modified original neck ribbon.

Gilt, enamels, 53.1 mm in height (incl. eyelet), 50.1 mm in width, weighs 17.5 g. The neck ribbon looks to be original, and apparently has been modified by the recipient to wear the award on another collar.

Fine condition. Tiny drips of red enamel or lacquer are visible on the white enamels of the cross and the eagle on the reverse. The head of the eagle is slightly indented. The side edges of the arms of the cross and the center medallion bear traces of the same red lacquer. Both the center medallions are not ideally straight but turned counterclockwise, the reverse more than the obverse. Two of the wire embellishments between the arms of the cross, on the left when looking at the obverse, are slightly misshapen. The wear suggests a repair job done by an amateur.

The Order of the Crown of Italy was founded in 1868 by King Vittorio Emanuele II to commemorate the unification of Italy in 1861. It was conferred on Italian and foreign citizens for extraordinary services to the kingdom of Italy, military or civilian. The order is now obsolete, suppressed by law since the foundation of the Republic in 1946.
