Red Cross Badge for the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, by Ivan Khlebnikov, late 1870s.

Silver, enamel; measures 45.6 mm in overall height, 26.4 mm in width; weighs 8.3 g. Multi-piece construction: the imperial crown, enameled red cross, and the vertical band tying the ends of the "ribbon" near the bottom are separate parts soldered to the ornamental ribbon border.

The badge was commissioned with the Khlebnikov firm that had opened in 1871 and produced some of the best of Russian jewelry and badges. Obverse shows "84" silver hallmark with the St. Petersburg's crossed anchors emblem and Khlebnikov's Cyrillic maker mark ИХ ("IKh").

In outstanding, excellent condition. The enamel is nicely preserved, retaining a nice luster and having only a minimal amount of rubbing and some microscopic contact marks, no chips, flaking or any other significant wear. The raised details of the numerals and crown are perfect and exceptionally crisp. The attachment pin is original and fully functional. Overall, an amazingly well-preserved piece, literally impossible to upgrade.

The badge was awarded to civilians for caring for wounded and sick soldiers during the Russo-Turkish War. /See Badges of Russia , by Patrikeev and Bojnovich, page 229, fig. 7.1/
