The Order Camoneana was awarded by Liceu Literario Portuguese, the Literary Lyceum of Rio de Janeiro, in commemoration of the 4th centenary of the death of Luís Vaz de Camões (1524 - 1580), considered to be Portugal's greatest poet, compared with Shakespeare, Homer, Virgil, Dante, and Servantes. The lyceum itself was established in 1868, and is considered one of Brazil's best and most prestigious schools specializing in Fine Arts.
