Podstakannik "Winter Troika", in Melchior, by Mstera, marked MM3, 1953.

Stands 96 mm tall to the tip of the handle, 70 mm tall to the lip,79 mm wide at the bottom of the skirt. Contrary to the majority of podstakanniki, the centerpiece showing a Russian troika streaking along a winter road is the entire artwork, leaving the "back" of the body smooth and blank.

Maker marked on the bottom. The number 3 in "MM3" signifies 1953, the word "MET" is for Melchior, "1 COPT" (1 Sort) is the quality control mark for the highest quality rating.

In very good condition, showing minor shallow indentations to the skirt, and just one barely noticeable bump to the top of the body. Very attractive patina highlights the high points of the artwork's relief. It looks as if there's been an attempt to scrub off the patina from the back of the body. Luckily, the artwork was left alone. If desired, there is a gentle and "natural" way to clean patina off Melchior, which, by the way, does NOT work on silver. Boil some eggs, take them out, dunk the podstakannik into the water. Just make sure there's enough water to dunk the entire podstakannik.

Please note: If you try to come up with a replacement glass liner, it should be made of tempered glass even though we urge you not to use this to drink from! We offer this strictly as a historic artifact (and dramatic stage prop for your dining room or study). We provide no warranty of its suitability for actually drinking hot beverages like tea or coffee. All we know is that it should look great sitting on a tray next to your antique family samovar.
