Stalin's bas-relief by Nikolai Sokolov, circa late 1940s - early 50s.

Very large, measuring approx. 15" across. In heavy aluminum alloy, thick and massive, weighing in at nearly 10 lbs. The wear is consistent with the plaque once decorating the façade of a government building, probably administrative or industrial headquarters.

The sculptor's first initial and last name, N. Sokolov, are pressed into the metal behind Stalin's back.

In excellent condition. The metal shows mild oxidation, evenly distributed across the surface. The original hole for wall mounting, reinforced by a horseshoe-shaped piece of steel held by two screws, is in place and holding firm, slightly rusted but in good working order.

Nikolai Sokolov was a talented Soviet sculptor and model maker who worked at the Leningrad Mint and was its chief artist from 1950 to 1971. Winner of as many as five Stalin Prizes, mostly for his portrayal of Soviet political and military leaders.

Please note that the medal in our photo is for size reference.
