In 1932, Gridnev was sent to the Mongolian People's Republic and tasked with facilitating the formation and training of border guards and state security forces. In addition to that, Gridnev did a lot of counterintelligence work spying on the "white" Russian emigration in Manchuria. He succeeded in recruiting several foreigners who fed him information about the activities of the Japanese and of the Russian "white guard", and their plans in relation to the USSR.
