Portrait of Stalin, carving on wood, circa 1930s.

Large format, measuring 11 ½" x 17 ¼", weighs close to 2 lbs. The portrait is a shallow carving, linocut style, on a slab of 5-ply plywood coated with clear wood finish lacquer. An uncommon combination of medium and technique. The back is unfinished.

In very good to excellent condition. The front surface layer of the plywood shows minor cracks in light-colored areas of the artwork, not too obvious and not detractive. The unfinished surface layer on the back side shows moderate cracks and light traces of old mold infestation.

This portrait is from the early years of the Stalin era when his visage hadn't yet been canonized to the point when only a few state-approved versions were allowed, and the artist needed a special license for it. An uncommon piece to illustrate the beginnings of Stalin's cult of personality.

Please note that the medal in our photo is for size reference.
