Medal in Commemoration of the 800th Anniversary of Moscow, Variation 1, 1947 issue.
In copper, 37.1 mm wide (larger than most other Soviet medals). Very attractive design featuring Prince Yuri Dolgorukiy ("The Long-Armed"), the purported founder of Moscow, on the obverse and panoramic view of Moscow Kremlin on the reverse. This is the first version of the medal having a flat rather than rounded eyelet.
In outstanding, excellent condition. The details are perfect and exceptionally crisp on both the obverse and reverse. The original mint luster is beautifully preserved on both sides; there are no blemishes or oxidation spots. Comes on original suspension device, a single-layer model in brass, with beautifully preserved old ribbon. This superb example is literally impossible to upgrade.
The award was among the first Soviet non-military medals introduced after the end of WW2. In 1947, Moscow was still recovering from the effects of the 1941 German siege, the air raids, and the hardship of the war years. The anniversary celebrations - and the medal issued on the occasion to distinguished citizens of the city - were designed by the Soviet leadership to boost the morale of the Soviet population and present a picture of strength to the outside world.
