Government Postcard Happy New Year, cosmos-themed, artist signed, 1973.
The size is continental 6" x 4". Postally unused, government postal marked, the pre-printed stamp has the image of two youths of Komsomol age and the Komsomol membership badge, one of the most widely-used government postal marks at the time. The back is divided, the artist's name, A. Solovyov, is printed in the upper left-hand corner. Published by the USSR Ministry of Communications, circulation unknown.
The artwork is quite attractive, subtly themed to celebrate the USSR achievements in space exploration in 1973. With 89 launches, 86 of them successful, and the "Lunokhod" rover exploring the surface of the moon, it is no wonder that the moon is the focal point of the artwork in the postcard, and all the decorations on the tree are stars.
In good condition. The lines and colors of the artwork are crisp and vibrant, the corner bumps are minimal. Five horizontal wrinkles are unfortunate in diminishing the sturdiness of the paper, but visually they are not too obvious. The verso is clean but has the coating layer stripped off in the lower left-hand corner. Mild storage wear can also be noticed on the verso.
However, the postcard presents very well overall. It will make a nice cheerful addition to a collection of Soviet memorabilia, and can be a great conversation piece on the subject of space exploration.
