Large Photo Portrait of Stalin at the 1945 Potsdam Conference, on fiberboard backing in a period frame, late 1940s - early 1950s.
Measures 12" x 16" including the frame, the image size is 9 ¼" x 13". The photo appears to have been rolled onto a fiberboard backing covered with some adhesive and coated with clear lacquer. This technique gained popularity after WW2 when the Soviet citizens, unable to afford art to decorate their homes (and having very little art available to buy even for those who could afford it), took whole-page photos of artwork from a magazine, rolled it onto a glue-primed backing and framed it.
In excellent condition. The portrait is pristine, no wear or damage to the lacquer coating whatsoever. The frame was made with great care, the corners reinforced with fiberboard triangles. The image is held in place by 8 nails. The brass hooks for the hanging cord are nailed securely and are holding fast. The hanging cord is in multi-thread twisted metal wire. The condition of the front-facing surface of the frame suggests that it could have been covered or coated in something that was removed at some point. However, the surface imperfections only add to the air of age and authenticity of the portrait.
Please note that the medal in our last photo is for size reference.
