Postcard Peace, Work, May, w.
Hammer & Sickle amid fireworks, artist signed, 1976.

The size is standard 5.5" x 3.5", unmailable without an envelope. Published by the PLAKAT ("Poster") Publishers, Moscow, circulation 1,000,000 copies. The artwork presents the communist symbol of unity between workers and peasants amid the starbursts of celebratory fireworks in the skies above the tips of the Kremlin Wall. The artist's name, I. Malakhieva, is printed at the bottom on the verso.

In fair to good condition. The obverse shows staining and soiling consistent with our impression that schoolchildren's inexperienced hands were trying to use this postcard as part of a larger propaganda display. Other wear is minimal: old long-since-flattened-out corner creases and minuscule corner bumps.

Indeed, it was customary to have fireworks on May 1st in the capital cities and regional centers of the USSR. Interestingly enough, the fiery chaos of the fireworks and red stains is seen in some strange Orwellian version of harmony with the inscription proclaiming peace and work.
