"Afghanka" Field Cap, dated 1986.
In rough olive drab cotton twill. The type with standard Soviet metal buttons painted olive green. Comes with a period EM hat badge. The liner shows a stamp of the Headgear Factory in the city of Ivanovo (Moscow Region) with an 86 date of manufacture and size 58 (approx. US size 7 1/4).
The pattern is unique among various military boonie hats due to its pointed top and numerous grommet ventilators, both of which serve to keep heat away from the wearer. Ideal for a variety of weather conditions, from sun to rain.
The cap is in unissued, near mint condition: perfectly preserved and free of stains, mildew, musty smell or other problems common for items that have spent decades in an uninsulated Soviet military warehouse.
These distinctive caps were designed before WW2 to fill the need for a practical & rugged cap for troops deployed to tropical border regions. The cap became famous during the occupation of Afghanistan where it was synonymous with the Soviet fighting man.
