Lead Cut Crystal Decanter with Stopper, circa late XIX - early XX C.
Stands approx. 11" tall to the tip of the stopper, 9" without, the foot is 3 x 3". Incredibly massive for its size, weighs in at 3 lbs. 7 oz. with the stopper. Holds 450 ml of liquid comfortably. Not maker marked but the style of the design, specifically the combination of an etched centerpiece with pineapple cut of the rest of the facets strongly resembles the work of the masters of Dyatkovo Crystal Factory, formerly one of the main centers of the Maltsov (Maltsev) glass and crystalware empire of the Russian imperial era.
This decanter stands out even when compared to others by Dyatkovo. Move often than not, the etched centerpiece would take up one facet whereas in this decanter, the center of the etching falls on the edge between 2 facets and spreads out onto both of them.
Dyatkovo Crystal Factory is one of two world-famous Russian crystal and glassware manufacturing centers (the other one is Gus-Khrustalny Crystal Factory) still very much present on the art and utilitarian glassware market. The history of both goes back to the year 1724 when a Russian merchant Vasiliy Maltsov (Maltsev) founded a small glassware works in Mozhaysk near Moscow. The number of Maltsov glass and crystal factories grew until the enterprise became the largest in the 19th century, producing household and presentation glass- and crystalware of wide-spread fame. They manufactured a wide spectrum of glass and lead crystal products, from simple glasses, vases and carafes to multi-person services and unique decorative items for interior design.
In very good condition. The only damage that makes this decanter less than perfect is the chip to the lip (see our photo). The purity of the crystal mass makes the decanter sparkle even under ordinary room lights. The cuts are polished, which adds to the diamond-like play of light.
Overall, a mesmerizing piece which will add a lot of beauty and quality to your collection of Imperial Russian crystalware. This is one of those things that make you exclaim "They surely knew in those times how to create lasting beauty!"
Please note that the teaspoon in our last photo is for size reference.
