Set of 2 Elegant Vases in Double-Layer Milk Glass, by Dyatkovo Factory, Maker Marked, circa 1960s-70s.
The vases stand approx. 1 foot tall, almost 4" wide at the lip and a little over 4" at the foot. The artwork is in the traditional "wild flowers" motif but, uncommonly, is positioned high on the vase, accenting its slender "waist" but mostly above it. Also uncommonly for such vases, the artwork is not concentrated on one side but runs around the vase as an iterative ornament. The artist's mark is on the bottom, a free-form brushstroke in the dominant color of the artwork, traditional mark of the Maltsov glassware artists. It is interesting to note that even though these vases were mass-produced, the artwork on each is similar but not identical which makes them stand out as a true work of art. Even iterations of seemingly the same pattern on the same vase are slightly different!
The vases are in very good condition. There is minor chipping and loss of green paint at the lip, not too obvious and not really detractive. A couple of microscopic hairlines can be noticed towards the bottom of the body but only at a certain angle against bright light, otherwise - practically invisible. One of the vases features 2 very small smears of paint used in the artwork: a tiny brown one and a very faint green one. Overall, all this wear and damage is too minor and small-sized to detract much from the beauty of the vases of this size.
Dyatkovo Crystal Factory is one of two world-famous Russian crystal and glassware factories (the other one is Gus-Khrustalny Crystal Factory) still very much present on the art and utilitarian glassware market. The history of both goes back to the year 1724 when a Russian merchant Vasiliy Maltsov (Maltsev) founded a small glassware works in Mozhaysk near Moscow. The number of Maltsov glass and crystal factories grew until the enterprise became the largest in the 19th century, producing household and presentation glass- and crystalware of wide-spread fame. They manufactured a wide spectrum of glass and lead crystal products, from simple glasses, vases and carafes to multi-person services and unique decorative items for interior design.
