Stalin Bas-Relief Portrait in Paper, circa late-1920s to mid-1930s.

Measures approx. 7 " x 5 ¼" not including the frame. The medium is thick cardboard-like beige paper with a smooth matte surface on the portrait and textured background. The image in high 3-d profile portrays relatively young Stalin, very different from his portraits dating to 1940s-50s. The use of sculptured paper technique is highly uncommon to see in Soviet artwork, especially one portraying a Soviet leader. The quality is superb.

The frame is a relatively modern addition; it is in plastic imitating wood and lacks the protective glass. The portrait is very easy to remove from the frame if desired.

The portrait is in very good to excellent condition. The bas-relief image is completely free of dents, staining or noticeable wear. There are few small spots to the background field and a single scuff above Stalin's head, none of it very detractive.

This very early piece of truly impressive quality is quite rare, certainly the first of its kind we've ever encountered. It is doubtful that very many were produced to begin with; far fewer survived to our days due to both the inherent fragility of the artwork and de-Stalinization campaign of Khrushchev era.

Please note, medal in our photo is for size reference.
