First Skirmish at Lake Khasan, an offset color plate, artist signed, circa 1940s-50s.

The image measures approx. 10" x 6 ¼". Total size with the backing frame is 13 ¾" x 10 ½". Printed on thin but fine quality semi-gloss paper and affixed by a thin line of glue along the top edge to a thin cardboard backing inside a printed frame. The title of the painting and name of the artist, M. Avilov, are printed under the lithograph on the right. The painting depicts the scene of the first skirmish in the Battle of Lake Khasan against the Japanese on the Soviet Far Eastern frontier. The battle lasted from July 29th to August 11th, 1938 and ended in a ceasefire requested by the Japanese side.

In outstanding, excellent condition. The image itself is without a single blemish. The backing frame is equally clean and shows just a barely noticeable area of discoloration along the bottom edge, probably due to light exposure, and minuscule corner bumps and creases. None of the wear is really detractive.

Mikhail Ivanovich Avilov (Михаил Иванович Авилов), (1882 - 1954), was a Soviet Russian artist and art educator, People's Artist of the RSFSR, active member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR, winner of Stalin's Prize 1st class.
