Bulgaria, Order of the 9th of September 1944, 1st class, Civil Division, Type 4, circa 1970s.
Gilded brass and enamels, massive 4-piece construction: measures 61.9 mm wide and weighs 73.7 g not including the suspension and connecting link. The gold portrait of the Bulgarian revolutionary Vasil Levski in high relief in the center, the disc with green leaves, and the center medallion on the reverse are separate superimposed parts. This version of the order features a larger, Soviet-style pentagonal suspension in aluminum. A very elaborate and impressive piece!
In excellent condition. The white enamel on the arms has a few minuscule contact marks that are barely noticeable, but there is no flaking or significant wear of any kind. The enamel retains a beautiful luster throughout. The gilt finish on the center medallion is nicely preserved and bright; the raised details of the bas-relief portrait are perfect. The old, likely original ribbon is well-preserved and sound.
