Table Medal / Plaque to Komsomol Propagandist, awarded by the Central Committee of VLKSM, with original Case of Issue, 1971-1991.
The Medal is in bronze; measures 65.1 x 52.4 mm; weighs 99.0 g. Features very professionally executed "sunken" bas-relief of Lenin and inscription "To a Komsomol Propagandist, TsK (Central Committee of) VLKSM". The reverse has a futuristic rendering of the hammer & sickle emblem and Lenin's quote "To study, to study, and to study".
The artwork for this medal was created by artist B.L. Staris whose name appears in the lower left corner on the reverse. There were two versions of it, in aluminum and bronze (the latter obviously for VIPs), both struck in 1971 at the Leningrad Mint. There were only 4789 issued of both versions combined, a small number by Soviet standards, so the medal is relatively scarce.
The medal is in very fine condition. The recessed artwork and lettering are completely free of scratches or other significant wear. There are a couple of minuscule scrapes to the top edge on the obverse and reverse near the upper left corner (when viewed from the obverse), neither of them easily noticeable. The obverse also has a small nick to the upper left corner and an even small bump to the lower right corner. The brass has developed a very attractive even patina throughout and is free of blemishes or oxidation spots. Overall, a very attractive piece.
The Case of Issue is approx. 3.5" x 3.5", wrapped in rubberized textured paper in light red and has a silk-lined interior with a fitted nest for the medal. The case is in very good to excellent condition, still very sound and showing only very mild wear to the corners. The wrapping is intact and not peeling. The interior shows a very minor amount of soiling, no significant stains.
