Miniature decorative plaque The Pokrov Church on the Nerl, "Церковь Покрова на Нерли", copper, champlevé enamels, circa 1970s.
Measures approx. 3 ¾" x 2 ½". Original hanger chain is also in copper. The plaque comes with the original package box. The image is that of the Pokrov church on the river Nerl, Vladimir Region, built in 12th century. The plaque was manufactured by the Experimental Creative Manufacturing Factory "Russian Souvenir".
In excellent outstanding condition. The plaque itself is in like-new condition, only a tiny bit of scuffing to the copper on the reverse showing its age. The packaging box has been somewhat flattened in storage and shows minor stains but it has no artistic or historical value in and of itself, so this can be disregarded.
The church imaged in this plaque is a XII century white stone Russian Orthodox temple gracing with its laconic beauty the territory of one of the many monasteries in Vladimir Region in central Russia. Interest to the churches of the Russian North has been long-standing and perfectly understandable. Ancient, ascetic and very spiritual, manly constructed exclusively of wood, some without the use of a single nail, they attract and amaze with the power of their understated spirituality.
