Excellent Reconnaissance Scout Badge, NKPS version, mid-1940s.

Brass, enamels; 45.8 x 36.0 mm; weighs 16.6 g without the screw plate. Early variation featuring a characteristically "square" overall shape, simplified wreath and tall ornament at the top. This early version of the Scout Badge has a rarity rating of 4 (rare) by B. Airapetyan

In very fine to excellent condition, far better than the average for a "combat proficiency" badge of WW2 era. The enamel is very well- preserved and shows nice luster throughout. There are some tiny scratches to the apex of the medallion and a few microscopic flakes at the edges of the white band, all of them barely noticeable. Note that the enamel on the red scrolls on the wreath - a very vulnerable spot of this badge - is completely intact as well. Details of the wreath, Dyagterev rifle and sword are perfect and exceptionally crisp; the original gilt finish is clearly visible in recessed areas throughout. A good amount of the silver finish is present in the central portion of the reverse. The screw post is full length, well over 12 mm. Comes with a WW2-type NKPS screw plate which is a period original and correct for this version of the badge, although judging by its heavy wear, apparently not original to this specific badge. The screw plate is slightly loose due to worn threads but still works reasonably well with the screw and will stay securely in place if undisturbed. /B.
