Vladimir Mayakovsky (creative period 1912 - 1930) became famous as a leading figure in the Russian Futurism movement in art. Even though he
is mostly known as a poet, his body of work also includes writing, directing and acting in plays, appearing in films, editing the art
journal LEF and producing propaganda posters in support of the Soviet Russia during the Civil War of 1917 - 1922.
As the terrors of the Soviet regime became more apparent with time, Mayakovsky's relationship with the Soviet state grew more complex and
tempestuous. His later plays The Bedbug and The Bathhouse (1929) were met with severe criticism from the Soviet government and
sycophant literary establishment. Perhaps, this contributed to his killing himself in 1930. Or, perhaps it was his frustration over the
inability to unite with the woman he loved at the moment?
