Table Medal / Plaque "Commemorative Badge for a Newborn", with original fitted case of issue and factory label, 1988.

In anodized aluminum, paint and lacquer; measures 40 mm in height x 42 mm in width. The raised inscription УРСР at the bottom is Ukrainian language acronym for Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. The flat reverse provides space for engraving the name of the newborn.

Comes with original fitted case of issue in red plastic with translucent hinged top. The box contains a manufacturer's label of the Metal Household Goods Factory in Kiev which shows the name of the item "Commemorative Badge for a Newborn", its Soviet standard code, a 1988 date of manufacture and a retail price of 1 ruble 10 kopeks.

The medal is in mint unissued condition. The box shows minimal shelf wear to the exterior, otherwise perfect, free of chips, hairlines or significant scratches.

A very interesting piece intended as a keepsake for an upcoming new citizen of Soviet Ukraine. According to some reports, such medallions were issued to newlyweds by the state during the wedding ceremony. The 1988 date of manufacture means that most of the medallions went unused and were probably discarded, as the Soviet Union disintegrated within a few years. Come to think of it, a person born in Ukraine in the 80s is some 35 years of age today and living in a totally different world.
