Kirov was one of the most popular Bolshevik leaders, which led to his assassination on Stalin's order in 1934. His death was blamed on counterrevolutionary conspiracy and helped Stalin to get rid of any possible rivals in the Politburo and the military. After his death, Kirov became an official Communist "saint"; even now most cities in Russia have a street, a park or a square named after him.
