High School Graduation Jetton, dated 1917.

In silver-plated brass and solid silver (the cypher); the pendant measures 35.7 mm in height (without the suspension chains but including the projections for their attachment), 33.3 mm in width; the diamond-shaped lower portion is 13.9 mm wide. The lower part is of multi-piece construction with double-layered diamond portion and superimposed silver monogram of the founder or patron of the school - who was undoubtedly one of the top members of Romanov royal family as signified by the imperial crown (possibly Grand Duke Aleksey Aleksandrovich). The eagle on top is beautifully detailed. The reverse is inscribed "Graduation class of 1917" - the year of the Russian Revolution.

The jetton is in excellent condition. The silver monogram shows minor wear to the high points, while the details of the eagle are perfect. The wear to silver plating is visible only at close inspection, but at a normal viewing distance the entire jetton appears to be made of solid silver. The attachment chains are of full length and appear to be original to the jetton.

Note that traditionally, graduation would take place in late spring meaning that by the time the jetton was made, Romanov monarchy had already fallen and the weak Provisional Government had taken over. Although the repressions of the Bolshevik era were still several months ahead, it took courage of the owner of this jetton to have it commissioned with imperial monogram prominently on display!
