Award Table Medal to a Winner of the Contest of Student Science Papers on Social Studies, History of the VLKSM, and History of the International Youth Movement, 1985.
In bronze; measures 60.5 mm in height, 60.3 mm in width; weighs 116.1 g. The obverse shows bas-relived portrait of Lenin on a flag (emblem of the Communist Youth League), recessed book in 3-d, globe and carnation (the latter symbolized international communist movement.) The reverse has raised inscription "To a to a Winner of the Contest of Student Science Papers on Social Studies, History of the VLKSM, and (History) of the International Youth Movement, 1985". Note the verbose, unwieldy language of the citation typical of the late Soviet period.
The medal is in excellent condition. The details are perfect, free of noticeable wear. There are no blemishes or significant oxidation, only attractive light toning to the obverse and dark patina to the reverse that adds character.
This very uncommon medal was issued only once as an award to the laureates of the 1985 contest - as opposed to other Soviet table medals minted to commemorate important events or anniversaries. Most table medals were typically issued to VIPs and some could even be briefly available for purchase to general public, but very few were given for any specific achievements. The design of the medal is also unusual with its almost square shape and partly recessed artwork. The model for the medal was created by the notable Моscow artist B.L. Staris. Just 300 were minted by the Moscow Mint in 1985 - a tiny number by any standard.
