Order of the Star, 2nd cl.
Nickel silver alloy, gilt; measures 54.9 mm wide, weighs 19.4 g not including the suspension and connecting link. Gilded center medallion features 2nd version of the national emblem of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. Shows single, stamped Dari character "2" (for the second class) on the reverse.
Excellent, near mint condition. The details are perfect, free of noticeable wear; the gilt on the center medallion is extremely bright. The reverse is likewise essentially pristine. Attractive light toning to the silver finish on both sides. Comes on original Soviet suspension device with a scarce correct ribbon in brand new condition. The connecting link appears to be original; its ends are still joined with solder. A perfect example through and through.
Established in 1980 and awarded for valor on the battlefield, mostly to Afghans, although few are known to have been issued to Russian advisers and other foreigners. The award was sequential: one had to be awarded with the third class of this order to become eligible to the second class. This requirement and the overall style of decoration make it very similar to the Soviet Order of Glory.
