"People's Medal" in Memory of Events That Coincided with the 1000th Anniversary of Russia, white metal version, 1862 issue.

In white metal; measures 28.5 mm wide; weighs 10.7 g. An attractive piece featuring portrait of Emperor Alexander II facing left. The banners on the sides bear inscriptions mentioning some of the main achievements of his reign such as the liberation of serfs, advancements in people's education, acquisition of the Amur Region and military victories in the Caucasus, abolition of corporal punishment, improvements in the leaving conditions of soldiers, establishment of elections for local government offices, etc. The inscription in the upper part is ПРЕОБРАЗОВАТЕЛЬ ("Reformer") and at the lower edge НАРОДНАЯ МЕДАЛЬ ("People's Medal"). The inscription on the reverse along the edge is "In Memory of Events That Coincided with the 1000th Anniversary of Russia." The medal was created by the engraver I. Chukmasov and struck in 1862 at the St. Petersburg Mint.

In very fine condition. There are some minor dings to the raised edge and a single small nick near 12 o'clock positon on the reverse, but no bumps. The high points of the bas- relief portrait on the obverse and double-headed eagle on the reverse show moderate wear, but most details of the artwork and lettering remain beautifully defined. A good amount of the original mint luster is clearly visible in recessed areas along the edge on both sides. There are no significant blemishes.

Please note, penny in our photo is for size reference.
