Badge of a Veteran of the 289th Ground Attack / Bomber Aviation Division, issued on occasion of the 50th anniversary of the unit in 1992.

Aluminum, paint, lacquer. The medallion measures 42 mm in height (including the eyelet), 40.5 mm in width. It shows the inscription "Veteran of the 289th Aviation Division - Lutsk" and dates "1942-1992". The suspension shows stripes of the Order of Red Banner awarded to the unit for its achievements during WW2. There is a Soviet style maker mark on the reverse of the suspension. In very fine to excellent condition. There are a few very minor scuffs to the paint, mostly on the suspension - otherwise perfect.

The Soviet 806th Aviation Regiment was formed in 1942 as a "combined" (i.e. multiple-role) air division, and in this capacity fought in the Battle of Stalingrad as a part of the 10th Air Corps, 8th Air Army (at different times throughout the battle under the Southwestern, Southern and Stalingrad Fronts.) The division was converted to purely ground attack role during the following year. It distinguished itself in the liberation of Nikopol and was subsequently given an honorific title of Nikopolskaya, and was also decorated with an Order of the Red Banner during WW2. During the 50s, the unit was re-equipped with modern fighter bombers and eventually, just before the collapse of the Soviet Union, became known as 289th Nikopol Order of the Red Banner Bomber Aviation Division. Because its permanent base of operations was in the city of Lutsk, Ukraine, it became a part of Ukrainian armed forces after the collapse of the USSR.
