Romania, King Carol I Centennial Medal, Early Version, 1939.
In brass, 35.2 mm wide. Early version featuring pierced crown on swivel attachment (as opposed to simpler examples with solid crown fused with the medallion). The obverse has equestrian portrait of King Carol I, the first king of Romania. The raised inscription under the portrait is INTEMEIETORUL DINASTEI ŞI REGATULUI ROMĀN ("The Founder of the Dynasty and the Romanian Kingdom"). The reverse is inscribed 100 ANI DE LA NAŞTEREA PRIMULUI REGE AL ROMĀNIEI, SLAVITU-SA IN DOMNIA REGELUI CAROL AL II-LEA ("100 Years Since the Birth of Romania's First King, Celebrated during the Reign of Carol II").
In excellent condition. The medallion is free of significate wear or dings. Raised details are perfect and crisp on both sides. Nice attractive toning to the medallion, no blemishes. Minor amount of verdigris on the crown. The original ribbon is nicely preserved and clean, with attachment fully intact.
The medal was instituted in 1939 and awarded to both high ranking military officers and distinguished civilians.
