Little Boys with a Book, cast iron figure, circa 1950s.
Measures 3 ½ " in height, 4 ¾" in overall width.
A very interesting work of the popular "Happy Childhood" genre. One of the kindergarten age boys has apparently just learned the alphabet and is reading from a book to his two friends. Note the quaint setting and bucolic atmosphere of the composition. The statuette is unmarked which is indicative of one of the smaller manufacturers, perhaps an early production by the Sverdlovs SChLZ Iron Works. Its style strongly suggests that it is of early post-war era, from late 1940s - 1950s.
The statuette was repainted and has since acquired a couple of minor scuffs while in storage. In very good overall condition nevertheless. This uncommon piece is not shown in the otherwise very comprehensive catalog "Cast Iron Art, 1920 - 2009" by Aleksandr Zak.
