Badge for Excellence in People's Education of Georgia, Type 1, #17, 1944-1946.
Brass gilt, silver plating, enamels; 45.8 x 30.4 mm. This fist, "Narkomat" version of the badge features two-piece construction, with a superimposed book (as opposed to a single-piece later version). Note the extremely low serial number. According to most estimates, only about 100 or fewer of the early type were ever issued, although serial numbers as high as 400+ have been observed.
In very fine to excellent condition. The enamel has light scuffs and surface rubbing; additionally, there are a couple of tiny flakes to the bottom of the book that are nearly unnoticeable. There are no chips, significant flaking or other serious damage of any kind. The gilt finish on the sunburst as well as silver finish on the wreath are almost perfectly preserved showing only minimal wear to the high points. The silver plating on the reverse of the badge is nearly pristine. The screw post is full length, approx. 11.5 mm, and although slightly bent, completely sound and fully functional. Comes with NKPS screw plate which is probably original to the badge.
