Badge to a Participant of the Public Protection Service During the XXII Olympic Games, 1980.

Aluminum, paint. Scherbinskiy Factory mark to the reverse of the suspension device. Medallion 41.0 mm tall (incl. eyelet), 28.5 mm wide. The obverse shows symbol of the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games.

Excellent condition. The paint and finish on the obverse are perfect. There are some minor scuffs to the gilt finish on the reverse, not detractive.

Very interesting memento of the late Soviet era. The 1980 Summer Olympics took place at the height of the Cold War tensions and were boycotted by most Western countries in response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan half a year earlier. The Moscow Games had been planned on grand scale to showcase the achievements of Communism, and had an unprecedented police and KGB presence. These efforts were largely in vain due to the US-led boycott.
