Badge for 20th Anniversary of the Soviet Cinematography, #317, circa 1940.

In silver and enamels; 18.3 x 26.8 mm. Engraved serial number on the reverse and stamped mint mark "MD".

In outstanding, excellent condition. The enamel is perfect, completely free of even minute wear or flaking. A good amount of the original gilt is still present on the lettering. on the obverse is visible although largely obscured by silver patina. The screw post is full length, well over 11 mm. Includes original screw plate with "Mondvor" logo.

The badge was awarded for outstanding contribution to the field. Like many dictators after them, both Lenin and Stalin highly valued cinematography for its propaganda value. Lenin went as far as calling it "the most important of all arts". Under Stalin, huge funds poured into movie production. Top film directors and actors were lavishly rewarded monetarily and decorated with orders and medals.
