5 Year Plan Year screwback badge, large tin commemorative loaded with Soviet symbols: hammer & sickle, Lenin's photo, Lenin's tomb, wheat sheaves, a tractor, etc.
Circa late 1920s - early 1930s.

45.2 x 36.9mm. Badge center features Lenin's photo in a red star above the inscription (in Cyrillic): "USSR, Five Year Plan" and various harvesting symbols. The badge's tin and red enamel "frame" features a star at the top and Lenin's mausoleum over a hammer & sickle at the bottom. Perhaps one of the most interesting features of the badge pertains to its construction: the clear apparently celluloid cover that protects Lenin's portrait is actually a section of 35mm film. Note the sprockets visible at the top!

Very fine to excellent condition. Much of the red enamel has flaked away over the decades, but it does not detract from the badge's impressive "look".

Considering the undoubtedly grey existence of the average Soviet citizen, a gaudy badge like this, made to commemorate either the 1928/1932 or the 1933/1937 Five Year Plan, would have been a very big deal for him to wear!
