Wehrmacht Map of the area around the city of Starobilsk in the Ukraine.
50cm x 65 cm official German military map, unused but with normal folding. Very Fine to excellent condition.
Starobilsk (spelled with an "e" by German speakers) is near Luhansk in the Ukraine. It is an area where theoretically not much happened during the Second World War.
Except for this fact: there was a Soviet POW camp for Polish officers located in the area. In the Spring of 1940, its inmates were taken to NKVD HQ in Karkhov and executed. Since their murders took place at the same time as the Katyn Forest massacre, the name "Starobilsk" is forever linked with Katyn and the names of the Poles who were once imprisoned there are included in the long roster of men who died in the Forest at the hands of the NKVD.
