Award Document for the Medal for the Defense of Stalingrad, #29606, special issue by the Stalingrad Executive Committee, awarded on 21 November 1944 to Leonid Kazakov (Леонид Семенович Казаков).
The document measures 14 x 21 cm (approx. 5¾" x 8¼ "). This Stalingrad Medal document is a scarce version having typographically printed text at the bottom for the position of the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Soviet (Council) of Workers Deputies of the city of Stalingrad and the Secretary of the committee. These entries are absent in vast majority of Stalingrad certificates because they were designed to be issued by military units rather than the city government. A facsimile signature of the chairman of the council and hand- signatures of the secretary in blue ink

The November 1944 date is rather early for a Stalingrad Executive Committee issue. At the time, the city was still lying in ruins and just starting being rebuilt (mostly by the German POWs.) Its civilian population was starting to trickle back in, but Stalingrad was still sparsely populated and very far from full recovery that would take years. The recipient of this document, Leonid Kazakov, was probably one of the Stalingrad's civilians who took part in building defense lines and then evacuated east across the Volga as the Nazis pushed closer. She was apparently also one of the first to return. There were relatively few Stalingrad documents issued by the city council, and most of those were awarded later, in mid- to late-1940s.
The certificate is in good to very good condition. It was folded in four for storage as customary and has developed minor separations along
the fold lines. It is nevertheless still sound and has not been repaired with backing tape on verso as is often the case. There are is a
small dogeared and slightly soiled areas at the lower and upper edges but the document is otherwise very clean, showing only the normal age
toning, free of the usual significant water stains, soiling, or finger prints.
