This is very unusual: a typical Young Pioneer flag was in single-layer cotton, very rarely silk, with the emblem and motto printed on one side. A double-layer silk flag of a single unit with embroidered artwork is highly uncommon. This flag used to belong to a Latvian SSR unit of Young Pioneers named in honor of Oleg Koshevoy, one of the legendary WW2 Young Guards resistance group in the city of Krasnodon, a group of urban partisans who sabotaged the Nazis until they were betrayed by one of their own, arrested, tortured and executed.

In excellent condition, showing just two small holes at the head and foot of the flagpole sleeve where the flag used to be nailed or stapled to the flagpole. No other wear to the silk visible to the naked eye; the embroidery is completely intact and perfectly clean.

Practically all Young Pioneers units bore the name of one or another Soviet hero. However, their unit flags were standard issue with the Young Pioneers emblem in the middle, and their motto "Always Ready!" in Russian. In this very uncommon case, the unit hero's name is embroidered on the flag, and not in Russian but in Latvian.
