Japan, Order of the Rising Sun, 3rd class.

Silver gilt, enamels and glass, 86.4 mm in height (incl. pawlonia crown and eyelet), 54.8 mm in width. Suspended on a paulownia crest of green leaves and purple flowers, veined on the obverse and inscribed on the reverse with characters meaning "order of merit decoration". The paulownia crest is suspended from a silver loop for threading the neck ribbon.

In very fine to excellent condition: the only wear visible to the naked eye is that one of the tips of the 9 o'clock ray of the star is slightly bent, and the pawlonia crest has a small chip to the green enamel on each side,

The Order of the Rising Sun, the first national decoration of Japan, was established by the Council of State Decree of April 10, 1875. It can be bestowed on the military and civilians, Japanese and foreign, as a general order or merit.
