Order of the Red Banner of Labor, Type 2 Variation 3, #11644, circa early 1943 issue.

Silver gilt, enamels. Measures 45.3 mm in height and 36.9 mm in width; weighs 37.5 g without the screw plate. This specimen is among the few made soon after much of the Leningrad Mint facilities and workers evacuated to Krasnokamsk and set up a new mint there. In the manner typical of early Krasnokamsk Mint manufacture, the order was assembled from available parts that did not go into production earlier. It may also be one of the "recycled" awards confiscated during the purges and then reissued with a new serial number.

Note the early, one-word "Mondvor" mint mark in small font whereas most other Krasnokamsk issues had a standard "Monetnyi Dvor" mintmark. Like the majority of its Krasnokamsk contemporaries, this piece has a serial number legitimately altered at the mint. The style of the serial number engraving precisely matches others in its range.

In very fine overall condition. The enamel on the banner is extremely well-preserved: it shows a nice luster and appears practically perfect to the unaided eye. There are a couple of minuscule surface flakes near the upper right corner of the banner, found only upon very careful inspection and some microscopic contact marks completely invisible without magnification, but no repairs, chips, or other significant wear.

The red star at the bottom likewise has some microscopic contact marks and flakes unnoticeable to the naked eye; there is no other wear. The white and blue enamels on the background are perfect. Most of the original gilt on the hammer & sickle emblem, wreath and ears of wheat is present. The details of the wreath and other artwork are essentially pristine and extremely crisp. There is a very attractive toning to silver throughout. The order has not been converted to suspension and retains its original full-size screw post slightly over 10 mm in length, measured from its base. An original period screw plate in silver is included.

This uncommon and beautifully preserved piece from the early Patriotic War period has good research potential.
