Tilting the medal to reflect a bright light reveals a group of small shallow scratches to the enamel of the 6 o'clock arm on the obverse (seen in our photo), and a single similarly shallow scratch on the 3 o'clock arm. This wear is virtually invisible at a normal viewing angle. The crown has a bit of tarnish on the right and left sides. The threaded suspension ribbon appears to be original, in moiré silk with 12mm wide central red stripe for the 1st class. The ribbon shows minimal wear near the jump ring but is very clean and free of any damage.
The Order of the Belgian Red Cross (Ordre de la Croix Rouge Belge / Orde van het Belgische Rode Kruis) was established in 1880 in two classes
and is an unofficial Belgian order. The second class is awarded for 10+ years of service in the Red Cross. The first class is awarded to
recipients of the 2nd cl. for 25 years of service. Silver bars can be added for each additional five years of service (max. 2 bars). A gold
bar is awarded in lieu of the third silver bar, thus rewarding 40 years of service.
