According to tradition, residents of Mozhaisk, a town and historic diocese near Moscow, under siege by the Mongols, prayed to Saint Nicholas, and he appeared before them. The apparition held a sword in his right hand and the town of Mozhaisk on the palm of his left hand. At seeing the apparition, the Mongols retreated. The grateful citizens erected a wooden monument to Saint Nicholas. This motif became especially popular as the subject of high-relief wood-carved icons. Typically, these icons would feature Nicholas dressed as a bishop, wearing a mitra (bishop's headdress) and an omophorion (christening gown).

The icon is in very good condition. The brass plate is not bent or warped although the obverse is slightly convex, the edges show no significant dings or dents. There is mild wear to the high points of the artwork but most of the fine details are still well preserved. Attractive patina adds character and an air of antiquity and authenticity. Both sides show small areas of rust, possibly from being in long contact with an iron-based metal. Overall, the icon presents very well.
